# What is Metadata?

**Metadata** is structured information about a title.

It covers identification, editorial, legal, and operational information.

In Origin Studio, metadata is stored as **Fields** on a Record.

### Why it matters

* It prevents duplicate titles and bad deliveries.
* It keeps teams aligned on the same “truth”.
* It makes enrichment and automation possible.

### System vs custom metadata

Origin Studio supports:

* **System fields**. Fabric-owned. Required for core operations.
* **Custom fields**. Tenant-owned. Built to match your business model.

See [Fields and Record Layout Management](/studio/admin-and-configuration/fields-and-record-layout-management.md).
