# Backup & Recovery

{% hint style="info" %}
Fabric’s Data Retention and restoration policy uses best Practices as outlined in the AWS RDS Disaster Recovery Plan as outlined here: <https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/database/implementing-a-disaster-recovery-strategy-with-amazon-rds/> - There is, however, some differences between Production and Non-Production Environments.
{% endhint %}

## **Production Environments (RPO - 1 Hour)**

1. Fabric Production Environments by default run with a read/write replica database in an external region to the primary AWS Region. This is to support the reporting layer so that live updates to the data in the transactional database occur, and the subsequent data manipulations to support reporting are triggered, they do not impact performance.
2. Read/Write Replica is maintained in synch with the primary transactional database
3. If the Primary Region becomes unaccessible, the Read/Write Replica will be promoted as the primary transactional database in the new environment in the DR Region.

## **Non-Production Environments (RPO - 24 Hours)**

1. Fabric non-production environments by default utilize a single RDS instance to serve as the Primary transactional Database, as well as the Reporting Layer database.
2. RDS Automated Backups are made outside of the Primary AWS Region
3. If the Primary Region becomes unaccessible, the Automated Backup will be used to restore the data to the DR Region Environment

{% hint style="info" %}
Full Environment DR Testing is completed every 12 months to ensure that the processes are up to data and cover all new features and services. Data Recovery Proces can be found here:??

{% endhint %}

{% hint style="success" %}
The typical Recovery Time Objective (RTO) from full loss of accessibility to an AWS Region is 2 hours.

Data stored in Fabric Backups are encrypted just as the data itself is encrypted at rest and in transit.
