# Games Record Category Use Case

## Background

The gaming industry has evolved significantly over the years, with games becoming more complex and immersive. As a result, the management of game metadata has become increasingly challenging, especially for large catalogs containing diverse types of games, from role-playing games (RPGs) to simulations and interactive stories. The **Game** record category in Fabric Studio is designed to address these challenges by providing a single source of truth for game-specific metadata, enabling efficient management and linkage of game records to other related records such as movies, shows, or collections.

## Data Considerations

Games often include a wide array of metadata that can differ based on versions, platforms, or regional releases. These differences are crucial for both accurate cataloging and enhancing the user experience in search and discovery. Metadata fields can include:

* **Title**
* **Synopsis**
* **Release Date**
* **Platform**
* **Genre**
* **Developer/Publisher**
* **Game Engine**
* **Supported Languages**

Games can be linked to other records in the catalog. For example, a game based on a movie may require the game record to link back to the movie record in the catalog, providing users with a comprehensive view of the game's background and related media.

## Game Record Category

**Configuration**: leverage flexible configuration options via [**Record Builder**](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences/record-builder.md) to customize metadata fields specific to your needs. For the Game record category, this means you can define and configure fields that are most relevant to your games.

[**Reporting**](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/reporting.md) **functionality** is also available, enabling you to generate insights based on game metadata. This is particularly useful for analyzing trends, performance, and user engagement across different game titles in your catalog.

Additionally, [**linkage**](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/discovery-record-tabs/linkage.md) ensures that all related content is easily accessible, enriching the user experience and maintaining a well-organized catalog.

## Example Use Case

### Scenario:

You are managing a game catalog for a major entertainment company. One of the games, "Space Odyssey: The Interactive Experience," is an interactive simulation based on the movie "Space Odyssey." The game is available on multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

### Implementation:

1. **Metadata Configuration:** Using [Record Builder](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences/record-builder.md), you configure the Game record category to include fields such as "Platform," "Developer," and "Game Engine”. You might also want to add metadata fields to record metrics to be populated by an integration with your gaming platform or external reporting , like “average playing time”. You also include a "Synopsis" field that details the unique features of the game compared to the original movie.
2. [**Linkage**](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/discovery-record-tabs/linkage.md) **to Other Records:** You link the game record to the "Space Odyssey" movie record in your catalog. This linkage allows users to easily navigate between the game and the movie, providing a seamless content discovery experience.
3. [**Reporting**](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/reporting.md)**:** With the reporting functionality, you generate reports to analyze the game's performance across different platforms and regions. You can also track user engagement metrics, such as time spent playing the game, to inform future content and marketing strategies.

## Limitations & Other Considerations

{% hint style="warning" %}
The Game record category is currently in beta and is not enabled by default in client environments. If you require this functionality, please reach out to your Customer Success Manager (CSM) for more information.
{% endhint %}

* **Custom Fields:** While Record Builder allows for extensive customization, some fields may require additional logic or integration with other systems to fully support complex metadata requirements.
* **Linkage Management:** Proper linkage management is crucial for maintaining an organized catalog, especially when dealing with cross-media content like games based on movies or books.
* **Reporting Integration:** To fully leverage reporting capabilities, ensure that all relevant metadata fields are correctly populated and updated regularly.
