# Record Builder

With Record Builder, users can instantly create bespoke fields with their chosen configuration and validations. Record builder is all about giving users the flexibility and control to tailor Fabric Studio to their needs.

Any new fields will automatically be added to:

* reporting
* bulk ingest
* the API
* the front-end User Interface

### 🤔 Why do we need it?

This self-serve creation and management of core fields throughout the application improves user experience and turnaround times. Users no longer have to wait for administrators or support teams to configure fields for them.

### :map: Where is it located?

One important thing to note is we have changed the location of Record Builder. It is now conveniently located within [Preferences](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences.md).

### ⚙️ How does it work?

#### Getting started

Head to *Fabric Preferences* and click on *Record Builder.* You will see a dropdown displaying the tabs that you can add custom metadata fields to: *Regional* and *IDs*.

If you expand either of those items, you will see the different sections available, for example ***Titles*** and ***Descriptions*** (which are sections within the Regional tab).

Once you have got to your destination, you will see all the available fields. You can enable and/or disable these, as well as create new fields with the configuration and validations that you require.

#### Core functionality

* Enable or disable existing fields to display or hide them from the application User Interface (don’t worry, if you re-enable them, the data reappears!)
* Create new custom fields in the [Metadata](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences/record-builder/metadata-custom-fields.md) (only Custom Fields section), [Regional](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences/record-builder/regional.md) (only Title & Synopsis section) and [IDs](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences/record-builder/ids.md) tabs of the application, with the necessary configuration options and validations, which are automatically available for [reporting](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/reporting.md) and [bulk import](/fabric-knowledge-base/learn-the-application/destinations/preferences/bulk-data-ingest-nuvo.md).
* Edit existing text fields to change their configuration or validation to meet your specific requirements. Set maximum character limits, specify the record categories they apply to, and more.
