# Clearing field values

### What it is

In Data Ingest, you can clear a field on existing records by putting the word **NULL** in that column in your upload file—**where this is supported**. Blank cells still mean "leave the current value as is."

### Availability

This behaviour is not turned on by default. You can only use NULL to clear values when this option is **enabled** for your environment or account. If you don't see the expected behaviour, ask your administrator or support to confirm that the feature is enabled.

### How to use it

1. Go to **Platform Management** → **Data Ingest** and open the uploader (e.g. **Launch Uploader**).
2. Prepare your CSV with the usual columns. For each cell **in supported fields**:
   * **Leave blank** — no change to that field.
   * **Type `NULL`** (any mix of upper/lower case) — that field is cleared on the record.
   * **Type any other value** — that value is written (overwrites the existing one).
3. Upload the file. Rows are validated before upload.
4. You cannot clear a **required** field with NULL; that row will show a validation error (e.g. "Cannot clear value for mandatory field: \[Field Name].").

### Tip

Leave cells blank to keep existing data; use NULL only when you want to remove the value. Not all field types support clearing with NULL—if a field doesn't accept it, leave the cell blank or contact your administrator for which fields are supported.
